Elin Ivings – Trainee Electrical Engineer, Machine Operations Department
“Working at Culham is very interesting. I particularly like the international and friendly environment.”
Degree:
MSc Electrical Engineering
University:
Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm
Job description:
I am involved in the design, troubleshooting, commissioning and operation of the JET Pulsed Power Supplies system. I have for example updated and rewritten technical documents and procedures for the JET Power Supplies, and redeveloped a diagnostic system, which monitors incoming data from mechanical measurements on the JET vacuum vessel, using LabVIEW.
Previous work experience:
During my time at university I spent a couple of summers as a Lab Technician at a powerplant and another two summers as an Assembly Technician for Siemens. I moved to England in June 2003 and worked as an Assembly Technician at Oxford Magnet Technology for six months.
I then received a placement to complete my MSc at Culham (MAST), where I developed an existing prototype into a commercial product, fast ion gauge measurement system, for measurement of ultra high vacuum pressure. In September 2004 I joined the Power Supply Operations group at JET, and was made a permanent member of staff here in January 2006.
Thoughts on the area:
I love the Oxfordshire countryside with its beautiful walks and its many golf courses. Oxford is a lovely town, and I can thoroughly recommend punting!
