Tom Barrett - Mechanical Engineer
“Working as an engineer at Culham is exciting, challenging and diverse, and it is a privilege to contribute to pioneering fusion technology. Culham is a world-class facility, but it is also a place of exceptional opportunity and learning. Right from the start, you are integrated into a variety of projects.”
Degree:
MEng Mechanical Engineering (2004) and PhD Design Search and Optimization (2007)
University:
University of Southampton
Job description:
For the most part my job involves the computational design and analysis of enhancements to the MAST tokamak, and procurement and commissioning of bespoke equipment. I am also an operator of the neutral beam system on MAST, and take part in regular shifts delivering up to 5MW of heating to the MAST plasma.
Professional institutional membership:
Institution of Mechanical Engineers
Previous work experience:
I completed a range of summer placements on route to starting at Culham, including working for Rolls-Royce, QinetiQ and B.A.R Honda. I would strongly recommend undergraduate placements as good grounding in an engineering career, and the Culham Graduate Scheme also provides excellent opportunities for training.
Thoughts on the area:
Oxford and the surrounding country is a beautiful and historic place to live. Culham Science Centre has very good transport links to Oxford and other nearby towns.
